Getting out and exploring Calgary's Parks!

Having lived in Calgary most of my life I seem to forget those hidden gems right here within the city. Far to often I feel I need to take my kids outside of the city limits so they can explore nature, missing what is right here in our own backyard essentially.

During our Calgary momstown Sip & Stroll event we made a game out of our walk in Fish Creek Park and a hour later the kids were still walking without complaining!

Next time your out for a walk have a simple scavenger hunt. Today we were on the look out for:

  • Flowers

  • A rock bigger then their foot
  • A "Y" stick

  • Grouping of mushrooms
  • A marsh - this was a great topic for discussion - what lives in there? Can we go in and look for frogs?

  • Berries
  • The creek. Here we got to see and had another great talk about the recent floods and how it affected the wildlife living in the park.

Not only did we get out and got some fresh air but we had a great morning of unplanned learning. The ride home was filled with talk of "next time we should look for this....", "did you hear all those birds but we didn't see any, I wonder where they were hiding".

I can not wait to head back to explore our little piece of nature right within the city.
