A Play at the Park, and Playing in the Park

One of the things I love about living in Calgary is the number of free, family friendly events the City of Calgary puts on. During the summer, there is everything from organized playgroups in various parks around the city to outdoor concerts and theatre performances. The City of Calgary even collaborates with the University of Calgary Drama Department to organize the Wagonstage Theatre Troupe, a group of University of Calgary students who travel around the city performing childrens' plays throughout the summer. On Friday morning, we took advantage of this wonderful offering, and headed to Riley Park to play in the park, and then to watch a play in the park.

The Riley Park playground is fantastic, with slides, swings, climbing structures and ride on characters that are suitable for a variety of age ranges. Our little ones burned off some energy "rock climbing", sliding, navigating the spiral stairs, and hiding in forts under the play structure. Playgrounds are fun, but you sure have to concentrate:

It's a good thing the rewards at the end are worth it!

After all that playing, it was time to head over to the site of the play:

There was music, funny clown noses to wear, and lots of interesting costumes to look at:

All of that excitement (plus a few cheerios and other snacks) was enough to keep our little ones' attention for almost the whole time:
