Chiropractic Care for Kids - What are the benefits?

Jenny Bradshaw a local Chiropractor at Fish Creek Chiropractic whose focus is babies, and kids knows there is hesitation from parents about taking their children to see a chiropractor. Her focus is to educate and help families learn more about the benefits of seeing a chiropractor.

Chiropractic care is a safe and natural form of health care that is based on the important relationship between the nervous system and the spine. The nervous system is what controls every organ, tissue and cell in our body.  The nervous system is housed in our brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. The spinal cord is protected by the bones of our spine, and when the spine is moving and functioning optimally, the nervous system within it is able to work at its best!

Babies and children encounter stresses that can cause interference to the nervous system as they develop and grow.  even  delivery can place stress on the baby with assisted or c-section births potentially causing even more stress.

When should your child see a chiropractor:

  •  After birth
  • When they start to reach milestones like holding their heads up, sitting, standing (postural changes to the spine occur)
  • When learning to walk (lots of falls onto bottoms).
  • As children get older they continue to have challenges to the spine and nervous system with things like long hours in a chair at school, playground accidents, sports and heavy school bags.

Having your child’s spine checked by a chiropractor ensures that these stresses to the body aren’t there long enough to affect the function of the nervous system or the normal mechanics of the spine.

Is it safe?

YES! Chiropractic care for babies and kids is very safe and gentle. After a thorough review of your child’s health history, a physical examination of the child is done to assess the interference to the nervous system. A adjustment is what the chiropractor uses to restore normal function to the spine, thus restoring normal nervous system function. Although chiropractors don’t specifically treat common childhood complaints of bed-wetting, colic, digestive issues, etc., many parents find that these complaints are improved due to the child’s nervous system being able to function properly and regulate the body’s systems

A finger-tip touch is used to adjust children and an adjustment looks quite different from an adult’s. Chiropractic adjustments for kids are usually painless and many babies sleep right through their visits to the chiropractor!
