Junior Chef - Rainbow Fruit Pictures

January is Kids Health Month and we kicked it off making Rainbow Fruit Pictures at Jr Chef with Jennifer House from First Step Nutrition !

Our rainbow picture was created using a variety of fruits with various textures:
Red: Strawberries, raspberries and dried cranberries

Orange: Oranges which the kids  peeled themselves
Yellow: Pineapple
Green: Kiwi which the kids again had to peel
Blue/Purple: Frozen blueberries

To much surprise the popular fruits were the dried cranberries, frozen blueberries and kiwi!

While the kids built the rainbows Jen shared how to manage keeping a healthy balanced diet with kids while trying to rise Non-Picky Eaters!

5 Great tips to avoid a picky eater:

1) Stop trying to control how much your child eats at meals. No more "3 bite rule!"
2) Do not be a short order cook or offer "back-up" foods if your child refuses what is offered.

3) Do not bribe or reward with dessert and sweets.

4) Continue to offer previously refused foods whenever you eat them, with no pressure.

5) Be a good role model. Offer mostly nutritious foods and eat them yourself!

Want to get in the kitchen with your little ones? First Step Nutrition has a Little Chefs Cooking class starting Jan 23 2014.  The Little Chefs Program is a parented class for children ages 3-5 (ish). Each session includes six-45 minute classes, divided into two components: the hands-on cooking (and eating!) activity, and then a nutrition activity. The classes are a hands-on learning experience for children and parents, and a fun way to expose your child to new foods and cooking.

If you are a momstown member Jennifer is offering $25 OFF the registration price.
