Preschool Luau With Huggies

Our momstown education theme for May was "luau", and we had fun all month learning the hula dance and the limbo, exploring recipes with coconut and pineapples, and reading books about the ocean and volcanoes. The weather also cooperated in Calgary for most of the month, with some days reaching a truly tropical (for Calgary anyway) 29 degrees.  Sunglasses, beach towels, bubbles and bottles of water made regular appearances at all of our events.  So did the Huggies Limited Edition Hawaiian diapers.  The diapers are absolutely adorable with great features such as Leak Lock® protection to keep wetness in, a SnugFit* waistband with unique tabs for a secure fit, and a contoured shape that stays in place through active play.  Each purchase of Huggies Limited Edition Hawaiian Diapers also helps to support Huggies' Every Little Bottom program, which was created to help provide diapers to babies in need through diaper banks. Our moms mentioned how much they appreciated the secure fit, and the added leak protection.  They also appreciated the cuteness of the diapers, which has come in especially handy with a few little ones who have hit the phase where they enjoy surprising their parents by appearing in only their diapers:

We were also grateful to have the Huggies Simply Clean Wipes on hand at our Luau Party.  Our Art and Play events always feature a craft, and crafting with babies, toddlers, and preschoolers is almost always messy:

 In keeping with our Luau theme, we talked and sang about different animals that are found in tropical climates such as Hawaaii, and made our own footprint parrots to take home:

To make one yourself, you will need

• coloured construction paper or paint
• glue
• googlie eyes
• various colours of crepe paper torn into thin strips approximately 10 to 15 centimeters long
• scissors
• a pen or pencil

1. Begin by tracing your little one's footprint onto a piece of brightly coloured construction paper.  Cut out footprint, and glue onto the centre of a second sheet of paper in a contrasting colour.  Alternately, dip your child's foot into tempera or poster paint, and make a footprint on the paper.

2. Cut a beak shape out of scrap of orange construction paper, and glue it a few centimeters down from the top of the footprint.

3. Glue a googlie eye onto the footprint, above the beak.

4. Glue strips of coloured crepe paper onto the bottom of the footprint to form the parrot's tail.  Add additional pieces of coloured crepe paper onto the parrot to form feathers on the head, breast, and wings if desired.

One of my favourite aspects of crafting with preschoolers and toddlers is the unique interpretation each little one has of the craft.  I love to see them experimenting with the material and exploring their creativity, and I am always amazed at just how innovative they can be:
